But I’m not going to start one sentence if I’m not ready to do it. Why would they take any longer though? Give me a break. I mean, until I get the first idea, lyrics might take 10 minutes. Doing a book is a different process than lyrics. So a long piece will probably be three sessions, but I don’t edit this stuff. When I hit the first sentence, it comes out very quickly. I wrote about horrible violence, nothing has really changed. They weren’t very good then but he would listen and I thought that was very nice. He was the only one that wouldn’t run away from me and he would listen to my terrible poems. ![]() There was Patti Smith and rock and roll poetry. ![]() When I first got to New York I thought I was going to do spoken word, but it didn’t really exist then. She was not very happy but she always encouraged me nonetheless. I remember writing a poem about killing my parents and reading it to my mother. Do you remember the first time that you wrote a poem?
